The alternator needs replacing on your Volvo. If you take it to a Volvo dealer, the job can cost over £300. Even a non-franchised garage could ask upwards of £200. Yet a new alternator only costs £100 or so from a reputable specialist retailer. If only you could replace it yourself. Your mate did it on his diesel Volvo but yours is a petrol model. Does that make a difference?
Yes, it does. Replacing an alternator is done differently on Volvo V70 models up to 2004, S80 engines up to 2004, V70 and S80 models from 2005 and diesel engines. Exactly how it is done in each case is explained fully in the new Haynes manual for Volvo V70 and S80 models. It is, however, a 'two-spanner' task - one that Haynes regards as 'Fairly easy, suitable for beginners with some experience'. There's the answer then - spend £18.99 on this manual, replace the alternator yourself and pocket a saving of £100+.
This new manual is not restricted to larger tasks - it covers everything from simple weekly checks, through routine maintenance and servicing to major repairs such as removing the engine. There are reference sections with useful information about buying spare parts, where to find the vehicle identification numbers, what tools you'll need and checks you should do before the annual MOT test.
Because the manual is written from hands-on experience gained from the complete strip-down and rebuild of several Volvo V70 and S80 models in the Haynes project workshop, you get practical step-by-step explanations, linked to more than 1,000 photographs, to help you get the job done right.
