Haynes is the foremost publisher of vehicle manuals and no fewer than 150 million have been sold worldwide. These sales figures are testimony to how useful and informative Haynes manuals are. The new Citroën C5 manual follows the established Haynes tradition in that it was written and illustrated following the workshop stripdown and re-assembly of several C5 models.

The Citroën C5 was introduced into the UK in April 2001 as a replacement for the popular Xantia model. In September 2004 the range underwent a facelift, offering a range of high-output, low-emission engines. The engines fitted are well-proven and have appeared in many Citroën/Peugeot vehicles over the years, with the exception of the 1.6 litre diesel engine, newly developed in a joint-venture with the Ford Motor Co.

With over 57,000 UK sales, the C5 is a good-looking, well-equipped vehicle offering a wide range of standard and optional equipment to suit most tastes and budgets. Provided that regular servicing is carried out in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations, the C5 should prove reliable and economical. The engine compartment is well-designed, and most of the items requiring frequent attention are easily accessible.

The aim of a Haynes Workshop Manual is to help you get the best value from your vehicle and it can do so in several ways. It can help you decide what work must be done (even if you choose to get it done by a garage). It also provides information on routine maintenance and servicing, and gives a logical course of action and diagnosis when random faults occur. However, it is hoped that you will use the manual by tackling the work yourself. On simpler jobs it may even be quicker than booking the car into a garage. Perhaps most important, a lot of money can be saved by avoiding the costs a garage must charge to cover its labour and overheads.

The manual has drawings and descriptions to show the function of the various components so that their layout can be understood. Tasks are described and photographed in a clear step-by-step sequence with details of what tools are required and a complexity rating. There are sections on daily, weekly and routine maintenance and instructions for straightforward tasks such as wiper blade and light bulb replacement. There is also a section on how to prepare your vehicle for an MOT test, and some new advice on driving economically.

As with all Haynes Manuals, there are sections on:
  • Maintenance - simple weekly checks to keep you on the road
  • Servicing - complete, fully illustrated step-by-step guides. It's probably easier than you think, more cost effective and a lot less complicated than it used to be.
  • Fault-finding - helping you to pinpoint specific problems easily
  • Brakes - safety checks and repairs for the home mechanic
  • Overhaul - everything from fitting a new oil seal to an engine rebuild
  • Haynes Tips - valuable short cuts to make many tasks easier
  • Difficulty ratings - every task is graded from 'beginner' to 'expert'
  • Details of tools required
