Classic Aircraft

Aircraft have revolutionised the way we live. Billions of passengers take to the air every year and around the world airlines operate almost 80,000 flights daily. Before the revolution, flying was, as often as not, a personal struggle in which a lone pilot and his single-engine aircraft tangled with the elements, the limits of his own endurance and the uncertainties of technology. Many of the endeavours of the early aviation pioneers ended in heroic failure. Quite a few of the aircraft pictured in this unique collection of the world's classic aircraft met the same fate. The photos, many of which have never been published, tell the story of civil aviation; illustrating how quickly aircraft design developed and how radically things changed from the early days of balloon flight through to supersonic travel. As aircraft designer Igor Sikorsky said, "Aeronautics was neither an industry nor a science. It was a miracle."

Classic Ships

Thousands of years before any of our modern methods of transport were invented man travelled by boat on the water. Later on men travelling by ship proved that the world was round, discovering new lands and new continents. By the nineteenth and twentieth century vast numbers of people used ships to emigrate to new lives in far away lands; ships soon became floating palaces, representing the ultimate in sophistication. Classic Ships chronicles our nautical heritage for the last one hundred or so years and features everything from tall ships to small ships, working boats and lifeboats. Most of all it's a salute to the liners that sailed the world's oceans carrying people to distant shores - port out, starboard home. With over 120 pictures, including many previously unseen, this really is a celebration of how man went down to the sea in ships.

The Author: Richard spent twenty years working in the airline industry before deciding to pursue his passion for writing. His books include Bill Wyman's Blues Odyssey, Rolling with the Stones, co-written with Bill Wyman; Sinatra, an illustrated biography of Frank Sinatra. He has co-authored My Take, Gary Barlow's autobiography & The Brooklyn Boy, Tony Visconti's autobiography. He's written sleeve notes for various record labels and appears regularly on radio and on TV.
