A well-mannered middleweight that's simple to use, cheap to buy and cheap to run - that was the verdict of MCN. It went on to say: Mechanically-speaking the Suzuki GSF650 Bandit is extremely reliable, especially the carb-fed motor, which will run and run and is simple to home service.
In other words, an ideal candidate for the Haynes Manual treatment. And guess what? Haynes has just released a new manual for the current generation of Bandit models. The original Suzuki Bandit was launched in 1995 and enjoyed immediate (if unexpected) success. Much of its popularity was due to the stunningly low price but Bandits were also very good all-round bikes - at home as a sports bike, commuting machine or for touring in comfort.
An inability to meet emission requirements saw off the old carburettor-equipped motor and in 2007 Bandits with a new water-cooled and fuel-injected engine arrived. However, the original concept of a brilliantly competent all-rounder at a low price was firmly retained. The 650 and 1250 Bandits were available with or without top half fairings and with or without ABS. A 'special' 1250 version was also introduced - the Street-Fighter, with 'crosser-style' braced Renthal bars, Yoshimura exhaust and a single seat. A derivative of the Bandit, the GSX650F, followed in 2008; essentially it was a 650 Bandit with a full fairing.
More than 7,000 of the new generation Bandits have been sold in the UK, so they are readily available (and remarkably cheap to buy) secondhand.
This new Haynes Service and Repair Manual will help you get the most from your Bandit in several ways. The manual provides information on routine maintenance and servicing and advises on diagnosis and rectification when random faults occur. It will help you decide what work needs be done - whether by yourself or by a dealer. You may do simpler jobs more quickly than booking the motorcycle into a dealer. Perhaps most importantly, using this Haynes Manual to do work yourself saves money by avoiding the costs a dealership must charge to cover its labour and overheads.
The manual has illustrations and descriptions to show the function of the various components so that their layout can be understood. Tasks are described and photographed in a clear step-by-step sequence with details of any special tools required and a complexity rating given. There are sections on pre-ride checks and routine maintenance and instructions for straightforward tasks such as checking fluid levels and filter changes, plus repair information such as clutch plate renewal and engine overhaul.
