How appropriate that a car named after someone famous for having many wives, mistresses, lovers and children should be a mini people carrier (or MPV) based on the CitroŽn Xsara. Launched in June 2000 and memorable for CitroŽn's associated quirky TV advertising, this economical, practical car proved an instant hit. Thanks also to being inexpensive to buy new and pleasurable to drive, it went on to achieve sales figures of more than 200,000 in the UK.
Well-equipped and reliable, if serviced in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations, the CitroŽn Xsara Picasso makes a sensible (and cheap) secondhand purchase for space hungry motorists. Of course, Picasso had his weaknesses and so does this eponymous CitroŽn - more accurately, annoying design gremlins. And just as Pablo's output is pricey, so parts and servicing of CitroŽns can be expensive. Do-it-yourself is the sensible option and help is at hand from Haynes.
The aim of a Haynes Manual is to help you get the best value from your vehicle. It can do so in several ways. It can help you decide what work must be done (even should you choose to get it done by a garage), provide information on routine maintenance and servicing, and give a logical course of action and diagnosis when random faults occur. However, it is hoped that you will use the manual by tackling the work yourself. Perhaps most important, a lot of money can be saved by avoiding the costs a garage must charge to cover its labour and overheads.
The Citroën Xsara Picasso Petrol & Diesel manual has drawings and close-up photographs to show the location of various components tasks are described and photographed in a clear step-by-step sequence with details of what tools are required and a complexity rating. There are sections on daily, weekly and routine maintenance plus instructions for straightforward jobs such as wiper blade replacement. Also included is advice on preparing for the MOT test, fault-finding charts and useful guidance for driving economically.
For more ambitious home mechanics, major overhauls to the engine, suspension and brakes have full instructions, illustrations, and a rating for their complexity. Where special tools are called for, the manual explains their function and (where possible) how to make a cheaper alternative.
As with all Haynes Manuals, there are sections on:
- Maintenance - simple weekly checks to keep you on the road
- Servicing - complete, fully illustrated step-by-step guides
- Fault-finding - helping you to pinpoint specific problems easily
- Brakes - safety checks and repairs for the home mechanic
- Overhaul - everything from fitting a new oil seal to an engine rebuild
- Haynes Tips - valuable short cuts to make many tasks easier
- Difficulty ratings - every task is graded from 'beginner' to 'expert'
- Details of tools required
