No.10 - the most iconic position in football. The shirt that every player wants to wear, worn by the superstars that fans idolise. Whether striker or playmaker, goalscorer or target man, whoever wears the No.10 jersey or its modern equivalent occupies a special place in the eyes of team-mates and the watching millions. In his superbly illustrated new book, Pelé, the greatest ever exponent of the No.10's art and singular craft conveys what it means to fulfil the role of a central attacker, and celebrates the most famous fellow practitioners through the decades.
Charting the glorious history of the game as the No.10 position evolved, Pelé's book, 10, brings a uniquely-qualified perspective on the demands of the position and the unforgettable passages of play that describe what makes No.10s so admired. Pelé examines some of the world's greatest players, including some who may have not worn the No.10 but share the position's magic: maestros like Cruyff, Maradona, Zidane and Puskás; unstoppable attackers such as Charlton, Gullit, Zico and Klinsmann; dashing forwards like Henry, Baggio, Garrincha and Rivaldo who captivated with their play; lethal goalscorers such as Eusébio, Müller, Lineker and Greaves; and the less celebrated No.10s who may have shone only briefly, but made a dramatic impact - Hurst, Rossi, Milla and Kempes.
10 isn't a definitive list of who is the absolute best in the position; it's about footballers who have impressed in the role of attacking player, who have offered something special over a long period or even just a single point in their careers. Featuring an evocative collection of outstanding photographs that show each player in thrilling action and in their charismatic moments off the pitch, 10 is a tribute to some of the great No.10s from the greatest of them all.
Regarded as the greatest footballer the world has ever seen, Edson Arantes do Nascimento, or Pelé as he is universally and affectionately known, is an iconic figure who transcends his sport. As No.10 for Brazil and his club sides Santos and New York Cosmos, he played a major part in defining the modern game and in bringing it to a global audience. A three-time World Cup winner with 91 caps and 77 goals, with a career total of 1,283 goals, his most glittering achievement came in the 1970 World Cup Finals in Mexico, where he and his team-mates took the game to an entirely new level of sublime artistry and thrilling excitement.
Since his playing days ended, Pelé has become a roving ambassador for the United Nations and UNICEF, combining his charitable works with a successful business career. Wherever he goes in the world, he is feted by an adoring public who share his enduring love of the sport he memorably described as "o jogo bonito" - the beautiful game.
