This special edition of the MGB 1962 to 1980 Owners Workshop Manual has been prepared as part of the celebrations to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the founding of J. H. Haynes & Co. Ltd in 1960. It is a faithful reproduction of the original, both in layout and in technical content, but all the photographs have been reshot in colour. There is also a new set of coloured wiring diagrams.
The MGB was one of the iconic British sports cars with an enthusiastic following and the earlier versions of this manual have all been bestsellers. More than half a million MGBs were produced between 1962 and 1980. There are still over 30,000 on the road in the UK alone, and a substantial number in the USA. The Haynes Owners Workshop Manual covering the range has been through three editions since 1971 and sold hundreds of thousands of copies.
This special edition will appeal to MGB owners past, present and aspiring. It closely follows the 1981 edition, with text in two columns rather than the three of current manuals. The photographs for the original manual were shot in black and white, so an MGB project car was taken into the Haynes research workshop for a repeat of the stripdown and rebuild procedure in order to create the new colour photos used here.
Fifty years on, two generations of the Haynes family have been involved with the business and the company remains the leading publisher of manuals today.
The MGB 1962 to 1980 Owners Workshop Manual also contains a new illustrated history of the MGB written by aficionado David Knowles, which concludes as follows:
"The MGB has grown up alongside Haynes - indeed the company was just two years old when Abingdon's new sports car was born - and both have earned a warm place in enthusiasts' hearts in those five momentous decades. As MG is synonymous with sports cars, Haynes is synonymous with workshop manuals. The author John H. Haynes OBE wrote his first manual when he was still at school. The publishing company which bears his name started as a cottage industry and is now a global operation with offices in three continents, selling millions of manuals every year.
