"We thought nothing of walking the five miles each way, then standing on the terraces for the game."
MP Willie Hamilton, born in Herrington, recounting his early trips to Roker Park in his 1992 autobiography Blood On The Walls.

When Football Was Football: Sunderland is a unique and magnificent collection of photographs of Sunderland AFC from the very early days until 1992, freshly selected from thousands of images in the Daily Mirror's extensive archive. These superb photos, many of them previously unpublished, document the rise of this famous, traditional and much-loved 130-year-old football club, from its formation by a teacher, Scotsman James Allan, to the Team of all the Talents, the 9-1 thrashing of arch rivals Newcastle United and the iconic 1913 FA Cup final.

Marvel at the superb pre-war period where the club, through the efforts of players such as Doig, Buchan, Carter and Gurney swept all before them to claim six English league championships. Enjoy the heights of the post-war period including Sunderland's Bank of England team, 1973 and Sunderland's spiritual home: Roker Park. It's all here. When Football Was Football: Sunderland brings to life the periods, the personalities and the human stories When Football Was Football!

"I am glad to be sent off." Charlie Buchan's thoughts on a rough-house of a match in Berlin, Germany during Sunderland's 1913 European tour

The author Paul Days saw his first professional football match in 1967, has travelled the football world extensively and is a veteran of over 1,000 matches involving Sunderland AFC. He was the major contributing author to Sunderland AFC's Official History published in 1999, has written many other football books since and contributed to A Love Supreme, the award winning fanzine. From the mid 1990's he wrote for the football club's Legion of Light Magazine and was the first editor of their official website now safc.com. Paul's family have had a relationship with the Wearside club for nearly 90 years as his Grandfather first saw Sunderland AFC play as far back as the early 1920's.
