Sister title to BR Steam in the 1950s and '60s, Britain's Railways in Colour - BR Diesel in the 1960s and 1970s presents a collection of over 240 colour photographs, many previously unpublished, capturing the British diesel power scene in the 1960's and '70's. Covering various parts of the country, almost all classes are represented.
Divided in to six chapters, main line locomotives, shunters, prototype locomotives and diesel railcars are all covered. To place them in perspective, short sections are included on electric locomotives and electric multiple units.
All the imagery is reproduced from original transparencies that have remained carefully preserved away from daylight since the day they were taken, ensuring that the original vividness of colour remains - a rare quality. The early photographs also depict the fascinating transitional era from steam to diesel, when the railway infrastructure was very different from that of today. In addition to this, the pictures are accompanied by informative captions, recording the date, location and engine details, along with other snippets of interest.
This Britain's Railways in Colour will delight today's railway enthusiasts, both those who recall the era with nostalgia and those too young to have seen the early diesels, some of which had a very short life.
Author Colin Maggs MBE is available for interview: A retired teacher and long-time railway enthusiast, Colin Maggs has several dozen books to his name, mainly on railway topics of the south-west. He lives in Bath.
