David Wragg
Publication: Out Now
RRP: £27.50 Format: Hardback
ISBN: 978 1 84425 828 4
The LMS Handbook tells the story of Britain's largest railway company, The London Midland and Scottish Railway - documenting the development of a national institution which became the biggest business in the British Empire.
Packed with facts and figures - many of which cannot be found elsewhere - as well as detailed historical narrative, the LMS Handbook brings a railway made famous by its diverse route network and popular express services vividly to life.
The LMS was, during its brief history, the only railway to cover all parts of the United Kingdom. This informative book, the third and latest in a series on the 'Big Four' railway companies, therefore examines both the extraordinary influence and the difficulties that resulted from the amalgamation of 33 mainland constituent companies to form this one transport giant.
Details of the managers who ran the LMS, the cities in which it operated as well as a comprehensive background of its predecessor companies also bring author David Wragg's extensive research of this topic to life.
160 black and white images of the LMS's locomotives and rolling stock, its depots, network and a selection of railway stations, complete a superb reference source which will be of interest to all railway enthusiasts this Christmas.
GWR Handbook
The Great Western Railway 1923-47
David Wragg
Publication: Out Now
RRP: £27.50 Format: Hardback
ISBN: 978 0 85733 005 5
The GWR Handbook tells the story of The Great Western Railway. or, as it's fondly known 'God's Wonderful Railway.'
Uniquely among Britain's railways, the GWR retained its identity from the time of its incorporation in 1835 until nationalisation in 1948, leading many enthusiasts to view it simply as the railway - forever synonymous with seaside holidays in the West Country.
With 200 black and white illustrations, author David Wragg's meticulous research has produced a highly detailed reference source of easily accessible information for this affectionately remembered line.
It combines text, statistics and photographs of the GWR's steam locomotives, rolling stock, depots and a selection of stations to document the railway's special heritage. Individual chapters are dedicated to shipping, road transport, air services, accidents and the 'safety movement' as well as the wartime operation of services.
First published by Sutton in 2006, the GWR Handbook is now being re-released alongside the LMS Handbook as part of a series of works on the 'Big Four' railway companies of the pre-Nationalisation era - the height of steam nostalgia.
