Smoke, Steam & Light

The railway art of John Austin

John Austin

Publication: 3 February 2011

RRP: £40.00
Format: Hardback
ISBN: 9780857330208

One of Britain's most celebrated living railway artists, John Austin, has resisted numerous requests to compile a book about his life and work - until now. This long-awaited title, Smoke, Steam & Light, produced in large format on art paper, presents over 100 of his best portrayals of steam trains with each painting accompanied by informative text explaining the setting, subject and the various techniques used to create it.

A detailed bibliography also provides a fascinating insight into the inspiration, personal perspective and thoughts that lie behind Austin's masterpieces, which are renowned for their eye-catching depictions of landscapes and turbulent weather.

These paintings have helped Austin win numerous Guild of Railway Artist awards during a distinguished artistic career. Smoke, Steam & Light examines how his creations take shape, from the initial idea through to the research, the sketches and painted roughs and, finally, the end product itself.

The Author:

Although he started painting at the age of eight, John began his early working career in creative lighting design. However, it was always his ambition to become a full-time artist specialising in railways, and in 1987 he moved to Bridgnorth to start living the dream. Working as a volunteer at the nearby Severn Valley Railway, he found the ideal environment in which to learn more about his subject. Today, he splits his time between Bridgnorth and Dawlish (where the main line to Cornwall runs spectacularly along the coast.)
