The Routemaster is the well-loved red double-decker bus that has served Londoners for over half a century, instantly recognisable around the world as an icon of London.

An open-platform design, with staircase at the rear and engine at the front, the Routemaster was designed in the 1950s, with a total of 2,876 examples built between 1958 and 1968. Now it has received the famous Haynes Manual treatment, providing a unique insight into the history, anatomy, maintenance and operation of this well-loved red double-decker.

Routemaster Bus Enthusiasts' Manual
offers the reader a nostalgic journey through the history of this remarkably resilient machine, from the unveiling of the prototype, RM1, at the Earls Court Commercial Motor Show in 1954, to the 700 privately owned and preserved Routemasters currently operating in the UK, many still active on specialist tourist and heritage routes.

With the aid of a wealth of archive photographs and illustrations, as well as ‘under-the-skin' photography of preserved examples in use today, the fascinating text explores the design, development and anatomy of the Routemaster, taking a look at the bus's construction and systems, and what it takes to restore, maintain and operate a Routemaster today.

For a 1950s design, the Routemaster was a bus with a number of features that would not become commonplace for many years to come, such as fully automatic gearbox, independent front suspension and - rare in the 1950s - a heater! Originally designed for a 17-year working life, the Routemaster was finally retired from frontline London service in December 2005, after nearly 50 years of continuous operation.
