How to further skill and enjoyment in motoring

John Lyon

RRP: £16.99
Format: Hardback

John Lyon is a legend amongst the advanced driving elite having taught high-performance driving techniques for more than 45 years. Now he has written Advanced Driving as the ultimate guide to pass on his knowledge.

This comprehensive and detailed book covers every aspect of safe driving, including handling skills, planning your drive, observation to anticipate events, cornering, overtaking, driving at night and in bad weather. The easy-to-follow text, photographs and diagrams take the reader through every driving procedure, making it is the next best thing to having a personal driving coach in the car with you.

Advanced Driving is the product of a lifetime's vocation to improve safe driving on the roads. John Lyon was one of the few civilian instructors at the Metropolitan Police Driving School in the 1960s which at the time set the highest driving standards in the world. He has taught advanced driving techniques to thousands of people on the High Performance Driving Course at the British School of Motoring and subsequently through his own company. He is also a champion racing driver having won 96 motorsport races internationally.

Informed by John's wealth of experience, Advanced Driving includes some surprising theories about how our roads are engineered to slow down drivers. Examples include tightening the radius through a blind corner which can be deceptive for a driver approaching or obstructing the view on an approach to a roundabout so you are forced to stop.

He also believes that the driving test should be much more rigorous, covering more country road driving, dual carriageways and motorway driving, and that drivers should be incentivised to take an advanced driving course.

Advanced Driving is peppered with John's extraordinary anecdotes, some hair-raising, some amusing, but all instructive in what can go wrong on the road and probably will. From a disappearing road in Hong Kong to a near miss with a train in a Ferrari, the stories are always enlightening. There are also stories about famous drivers, such as Stirling Moss and Louis Chiron, who John has met over the years.

Suitable for all drivers, be they newly qualified or experienced, Advanced Driving will help all keen drivers to refine their skills and in so doing add enjoyment and safety to their motoring.
