'As the leader‘s voice crackled over the headphones I turned automatically towards the fighters, the 109s, leaving the bombers to the other sections. . . . Now the moment had come. That filthy yellow nose streaked into my sights, I saw my rounds splashing all along the fuselage, piercing the engine cowlings, shattering his hood. Thick, rolling clouds of black smoke poured from his engine, he rolled over slowly, so slowly, and I followed him - it - down, watching him disappear into a wood, vertically, at 400mph.‘ 'Bogle‘ Bodie, 66 Squadron, 1940
During the Battle of Britain an RAF Spitfire squadron commander asked some of his pilots to write about their combat experiences. The book was published in 1942 as Ten Fighter Boys, penned by ten pilots on 66 Squadron, most of whom had seen action in the Battle of Britain and in fighter sweeps over France in 1941-2.
By the time Ten Fighter Boys was published, three of the original authors were dead; by the war‘s end in 1945, only five of the ten were still alive.
Ten Fighter Boys a unique account written at the time of the events described. It gives a rare insight into the 'here-today-gone-tomorrow‘ world of the Spitfire pilot, at a time when the fate of Britain and the free world hung in the balance. It is accompanied by a new introduction by Jimmy Corbin DFC, last surviving pilot of the 'Ten Fighter Boys'.
