In May 1915, a German torpedo sank the sleek Cunard liner, Lusitania. Leaving from New York bound for Liverpool, the great ship sank in just 18 minutes off the coast of Ireland, taking 1,195 civilian lives with her. The sinking is often considered by historians to be the second most famous civilian passenger liner disaster after the sinking of Titanic.
Almost from the moment the Lusitania was sunk, controversy has surrounded her. The sinking turned world opinion against Germany, and the deaths of 123 American passengers was the first step in bringing the United States into the First World War. Rumours of conspiracies and cover-ups surround the liner, and over 80 years later she is still a ship of mystery.
Historians ask why she sank so quickly? Had the liner been carrying munitions for the British? Critics argue that perhaps Winston Churchill allowed the sinking in the hope that it might draw America into the war?
In 1993 Robert Ballard led an expedition to the wreck of the Lusitania in search of the answers. In the fascinating Robert Ballard's Lusitania, he details his journey through the murky depths of the Irish Coast in an attempt to solve the mysteries that surround this great ship. High-quality underwater imagery sheds light on the cause of the sinking and combined with Ballard's knowledge and expertise, his conclusions are authoritative, providing an intriguing, definitive account of what happened on that fateful May afternoon.
