A true British classic

Haynes's highly respected 'Classic Makes' series would not be complete without an account of TVR, maker of hairy-chested sports cars for over 60 years. Adhering to the series format of blending history and technical information with practical guidance in the form of driving impressions and buying hints, TVR: Haynes Classic Makes Series is a complete study of the company and its cars. It is a rollercoaster ride as the Blackpool-based company has had many ups and downs - some glorious highs, such as the 1992 UK motor show where an order was taken on average every eight minutes, to various financial crises, ownership changes and an uncertain future.

The TVR story reads like an automotive soap opera, with extraordinary characters, setbacks and triumphs. Born in a British seaside town adrift from the traditional motor industry, the company developed a reputation for fearsome road cars and an enviable track presence, as well as memorable appearances in Hollywood films. TVRs always embodied one man's vision and each change of ownership brought its own change of character: inevitably bigger, louder and faster, with unique style and detail. Unlike many rivals, TVR remained defiantly British through good times and bad, a fact that endeared the company and its cars to many loyal fans both at home and abroad.

From Trevor Wilkinson's specials to the astonishing Sagaris, the meticulously researched and generously illustrated TVR: Haynes Classic Makes Series tells the whole colourful story. Each major model series is covered, supported by design and development stories from key personalities, technical data, real-world driving impressions and buying advice from the experts.

There is a liberal dose of memories and anecdotes from new interviews with TVR personnel, such as last interview with the late Trevor Wilkinson and sections recounting TVR's racing adventures and might-have-been models. TVR: Haynes Classic Makes Series concludes with a serious analysis of the controversial Russian takeover and the story of what seemed to be the end of TVR production in Blackpool.

Author Russell Hayes wrote for UK magazines such as What Car? and Complete Car before freelancing for national newspapers, BBC TV's Top Gear and Channel 4's Driven He now works as press officer for The Crown Prosecution Service. He is the author of another title in the Haynes Classic Makes Series, Lotus: The Creative Edge. His first book, Lotus, is a recent addition to the 'Classic Makes' series.
