"A nation that forgets its past has no future." Winston Churchill

When Britain Went To War in September 1939, few in the country realised they were about to embark on nearly six years when life in Britain would change beyond all recognition. During these six long years everyone in the country was involved in the push, whether they were in the military or civilians whose jobs were vital to the war effort. Additionally, every woman in the country, whether a mother, sister, grandmother or daughter was caught up in the conflict and helped to maintain the everyday life for which Britain's military men were fighting.

Much is known about what happened in Britain during the Second World War. There was the blackout, the Blitz, the shortages and the rationing. There was the Home Guard, the ARP men and women, the firefighters, and there were hundreds of thousands of women suddenly thrust into jobs previously thought only doable by men. But there was also football, fashion, entertainment, humour and even Christmas!

When Britain Went To War is the real, everyday story of British men, women and children who fought a daily battle to keep the home fires burning throughout the war. It tells the remarkable story of how ordinary people did extraordinary things, using stunning unseen photographs from the archive of the Daily Mirror. When Britain Went To War investigates how everything from what people ate to what they wore did little to cheer the millions of people left behind while loved ones went off to fight.

Author Richard Havers worked in the airline business, advertising, music production and radio before becoming a full-time writer. His books include Bill Wyman's Blues Odyssey, Rolling With The Stones and the acclaimed illustrated biography Sinatra. He co-wrote Better Late Than Never, Len Goodman's autobiography, MyTake, Gary Barlow's autobiography, as well as books on such diverse subjects as archaeology, football, pop music, broadcasting, aviation and jazz. He's currently working on a novel about the dark days in the run-up to the Second World War.
