Indian is a magical name in motorcycling. Its mention brings to mind lithe machines with lightning acceleration, a distinctive engine sound, glorious handling, artistic design - and a passionate following worldwide. Its distinctive trademark was the bark of its high-revving, side-valve engine. This was joined in later years by the quiet hum of the smooth-running four-cylinder models, which could assume a lightning burst of acceleration and an impudent snarl at the touch of the throttle.

The roars of both were to echo through nearly every country of the world. There were over two dozen makes of motorcycles on the market during the heyday of motorcycling in the United States. Yet in the minds of many enthusiasts, none of these quite approached the verve, style, artistic functionality of design or handling abilities of the Indian.

The Iron Redskin is the story of the most loved of American motorcycles. It is a vast work, yet it was hailed as one of the most readable and interesting histories ever when it was first published in 1977. Following many reprints, the author wrote a new chapter covering events up to the mid-1990s, and this is included for the first time in this redesigned and expanded edition, which also features a new colour plate section. Finally, a postscript provided by Bob Stark brings the story up to the present day. It is pure motorcycling history told with the pace and grace of a classic V-twin, Indian style!

The late Harry V. Sucher was a retired veterinarian and professional journalist. Harry had a lifelong preoccupation with motorcycling. An enthusiastic rider since early youth, he later developed an intense interest in the historic aspects of the sport. Born in 1915, he lived through both the vintage and classic eras, and enjoyed a wide acquaintance with early-day participants in the industry as well as many pioneer riders. His particular fascination with Indians began after being taken for a short journey on a Powerplus model by a family friend in 1921. His continuing experiences with the make over the years, through ownership of various models, eventually led to his assembling a large collection of antique machines. This in turn led to intensive research into Indian's complex history, the ultimate result of which was this book. Harry passed away in 2009, sadly before this new version of The Iron Redskin was published.
