Since its rebirth in 1991, Triumph has become a major motorcycle manufacturer with one of the most modern facilities in the world at Hinckley in Leicestershire. As a sign of its growing confidence, in 2006 the company went head-to-head with Japanese factories by producing a supersport bike - the Daytona 675. This three-cylinder, 675cc bike with its all-new aluminium twin-spar frame and sophisticated suspension soon drew praise from journalists and achieved success on the track. Healthy sales followed and continue after four years in production.
A year after the Daytona model came the Street Triple - with a de-tuned engine for more mid-range power and lower specification suspension and brakes. In 2009, the Triumph Street Triple R gained the brakes and suspension of the Daytona model but retained the Street Triple styling. There was also a special edition Daytona with various carbon fibre panels.
Now, in its 50th anniversary year, Haynes has released a manual for the Triumph 675 models. Such is the popularity of Haynes manuals that a remarkable 150 million have been sold worldwide. Now a global operation with offices on three continents, Haynes is, like Triumph, an essentially British company. The new manual covers the Triumph Daytona (2006 to 2010), Street Triple (2007 to 2010) and Street Triple R (2009 and 2010) together with Special Edition versions.
As with all Haynes manuals, the Triumph 675 Daytona & Street Triple Service and Repair Manual can help owners decide what work must be done, even if they choose to have it carried by a dealer. Some people will use the manual to tackle the work themselves - for many simpler jobs, DIY may be quicker than arranging an appointment to get the motorcycle into a dealer and making the trips to leave it and pick it up. More importantly, avoiding the expense the shop must pass on to cover its labour and overhead costs can save a lot of money. An added benefit is the sense of satisfaction and accomplishment that owners get after doing the job themselves.
In the introduction, there is interesting background information about Triumph and its resurgence plus useful data on model development and identification numbers.
The section on pre-ride checks takes the reader through fluid level checks, legal and safety checks plus tyres, suspension, steering and the drive chain.
There follows chapters on each of the main components - engine, gearbox, suspension, brakes and so on. The Triumph 675 Daytona & Street Triple Service and Repair Manual has illustrations and descriptions to show the function of the various components so that their layout can be understood. Tasks are described and photographed in a clear step-by-step sequence with details of any special tools required and a complexity rating given. There are sections on pre-ride checks and routine maintenance and instructions for straightforward tasks such as checking fluid levels and filter changes, plus repair information such as clutch plate renewal and engine overhaul.
