When Football Was Football: Newcastle United is a unique and superbly presented collection of photographs of Newcastle United Football Club from the very early days until 1992, freshly selected from tens of thousands of images in the "Daily Mirror's" extensive archive. These evocative pictures, many of them previously unpublished, chart the rise of one of the most talked about football clubs in the English game.

It isn't about the modern era of football; all-seated stadia, corporate hospitality with champagne and prawn sandwiches, of superstar prima-donnas, foreign imports and football as a 'commercial product'. This is a nostalgic look at Newcastle United Football Club in the days before the Premier League and the huge media circus fed by satellite television.

Take a look back at the halcyon days of our national game; the 'good old days' before billionaire owners from around the globe took control, with astronomical transfer fees and sky-high player wages. It's about terracing and passion, Bovril at half-time, peanut sellers around the ground, muddy pitches and orange match-balls.

When Football Was Football: Newcastle United brings to life the nostalgia of a colourful history, from the early days and the Edwardian Masters of the 1900s; the Title and Cup winning sides of the '20s and '30s which had some fabulous characters like Wee Hughie Gallacher, then to the Toon's immediate post-war success with a star-studded line-up with the likes of Milburn and Mitchell.

Moving on through the years and to the treble of Wembley victories, European football - and more silverware! Into the '70s and further Wembley action with larger than life characters like Supermac - while following that came the emergence of the Geordie lads Waddle, Beardsley and Gazza and of course the coming of the Messiah - Kevin Keegan. Keegan captivated Tyneside as the club was transformed at the turn of the '90s and started on what was to be a headlining roller-coaster ride. It's all here in When Football Was Football: Newcastle United.

The author Paul Joannou has for over 25 years been Newcastle United's official historian. First watching the Black 'n' Whites during the early '60s, he has written several books on the club, including the acclaimed 480-page centenary history, United: The First 100 Years & More. Also included in Paul's titles are stirring books on the Toon's famous Centre-forwards, Shirt of Legends, and on the home of the equally celebrated Toon Army, Fortress St James. He has built up a definitive library on the club's history and also contributes to the club's matchday programme, monthly magazines, DVD and website features. Paul holds the club archive and is the ultimate source of knowledge on the club's lively past and present, from the earliest pioneer days on Victorian Tyneside to the Newcastle United soap-opera of today.
