The images here stretch from the early days of the club and Willie Maley, Celtic's imperious first manager, and include such events as the 1937 Scottish Cup final, which drew European club football's record match attendance, plus such fabulous players from the early days as Patsy Gallacher, Jimmy McGrory and Jimmy Delaney, all of whom helped establish Celtic's reputation for winning in an enterprising and exciting fashion.
The glorious 1967 European Cup victory is shown from various new pictorial angles, with some special, previously unseen and unusual pictures capturing the sights and sounds of that ground-breaking moment in football history, and there are fresh and intriguing images here of the Lisbon Lions themselves that do much to display just why they were such a startlingly successful group of players. Jock Stein, the man who masterminded that unique victory, is captured here in his vigorous and daunting prime, as are the greats who later lived up to the standard set by the Lions, such as Kenny Dalglish and Henrik Larsson.
Just as intriguing as the definitive moments in the club's history are the more day-to-day pictures of life at Celtic, of players training, relaxing, travelling and dining together, dressing up in wacky gear and playing pranks on each other; pictures that say much about the dynamics of the club. The changing face of Celtic Park is also shown to fine effect in When Football Was Football: Celtic.
