In the run-up to the Italian Grand Prix at Monza next weekend, Haynes publishes the first definitive biography of Formula One (F1) racing driver Jochen Rindt, 40 years ago to the month since he was killed in qualifying for the same race.
He remains the only driver ever to be awarded the FIA Formula One World Championship posthumously following his accident at Monza on 5 September 1970.
Jochen Rindt Uncrowned King is the first fully illustrated, English language biography of the Austrian star and includes poignant, previously unpublished photographs of his childhood and last hours.
Award-winning F1 writer David Tremayne chronicles the life of a champion whose name has become synonymous with phenomenal speed and other-worldly car control. Drawing on exclusive recollections of family such as his half brother Uwe Eisleben, and close friends such as Bernie Ecclestone and Roy Winkelmann, and tracing hitherto unrecorded details of Rindt's war-time birth and the death of his parents before his first birthday, this book puts an under-written racer into his correct perspective as one of the fastest and most dramatic drivers in Formula One history.
Tremayne combines his trademark attention to detail and passion for the sport with a deep understanding of Rindt's character and relationships.
Rindt's death, the third in a tragic year of Formula One which had already claimed New Zealander Bruce McLaren and Briton Piers Courage, inspired his closest competitor and great friend, Jackie Stewart, to redouble his campaign to increase safety for drivers.
In the foreword to the book Stewart describes their British Grand Prix battle of 1969 as "The most enjoyable race I ever had."
Stewart continues:
"His exuberant driving was truly remarkable, his car control superb. If you were leading Jochen in a race, your mirrors were full of a car going sideways behind you and the normal reaction might have been: 'This won't last long; he's going to have a shunt,' and again, it just never happened."
