The daring attack on the great dams of Western Germany in May 1943 by RAF Lancasters of 617 Squadron is probably the most famous bombing raid of the Second World War.

Now out in paperback, this compelling account was first published ten years ago and has been unavailable for the past four years.

The Dam Busters has all the ingredients of a classic war story - a miracle weapon, an eccentric inventor, a secret squadron of elite airman from the RAF led by a highly decorated young wing commander and a series of seemingly indestructible targets.

In this lavishly illustrated book featuring 200 archive photographs, including a number of rare colour images, aviation historian and author Jonathan Falconer gives a meticulously-researched story of Operation 'Chastise'.

He recounts the inspired development of Barnes Wallis's bouncing bomb and the specialist planning of the raid, through the intensive training of the aircrew to the daring attack itself. Analysing the aftermath of the operation, he explains how the men of 617 Squadron became the most decorated aircrew in the RAF. With the feats of the legendry raid immortalised in the epic 1954 film The Dam Busters, the book includes a chapter on the film and the foreword is written by the late Richard Todd, who played Guy Gibson in the movie.

With Peter Jackson's eagerly-anticipated remake of the classic Dam Busters film currently in production, The Dam Busters is a riveting read for military history enthusiasts as well as the general reader who will be captivated by this classic Second World War story.
