Layout Design is the first title in a new series, Realistic Railway Modelling, written by Iain Rice, a leading expert in the field.
Model railway layout planning has come a long way from the days when the objective was to try and cram Euston to Carlisle onto a ping-pong table! The cutting edge of contemporary design is all about realism, authenticity, careful presentation and that magical ingredient - atmosphere. How you go about achieving this elusive blend of attributes forms the subject of Realistic Railway Modelling: Layout Design.
Primarily aimed at keen modellers who want to achieve the highest standards, this comprehensive all-colour book is packed with 300 photos and diagrams over ten themed chapters covering different aspects of the design process and culminating in a final chapter of 'worked examples'.
Layout planning is where the hobby essentially starts and Rice considers all the elements involved in developing plans - prototypical, practical, visual and operational. He also advises on site locations and describes design techniques.
The author describes himself as being from 'the authentic school of railway modelling'. He goes on to say 'For me, it is about realism, accuracy and atmosphere.... I try to create a believable scene by thinking holistically about the entire project rather than just focusing on the trains'.
Realistic Railway Modelling: Layout Design is meticulous in its approach and will fascinate all railway modellers who will be inspired to look at the design process in a fresh light.
