The World Cup may have ended in the usual tale of heart-ache for England fans this summer, but it did at least provide its fair share of gaffes to take our minds off the action.
Football may be more important than life or death, according to Bill Shankly, but fortunately it is also extremely funny. They Talk a Good Game!, published by Haynes, is a new compendium of classic foot-in-mouth moments from some of football's finest.
Ever wondered what goes on inside the mind of a footballer? Not very much at all, if we are to go by the pearls of wisdom contained within this little gem of a book from Haynes.
The laughs are not just confined to the pitch, since many of today's so-called TV 'experts'
- ex-professionals who've probably headed one ball too many in their time - regularly remind us that a footballer's feet will always move far quicker than his brain.
Many of the best funnies are included in They Talk a Good Game!, along with some great photography from the Daily Mirror's wonderful archive. This collection of football-funnies will have you laughing out loud and should make for the perfect stocking-filler this Christmas.
"The boss just said 'if you win tonight you'll be immortal for the rest of your lives'"
Rangers Legend Derek Johnstone
"You can't say my team aren't winners. They've proved that by finishing fourth, third and second in the past three seasons." Gerard Houllier, Liverpool Manager, 2002
"I couldn't settle in Italy - it was like living in a foreign country" Ian Rush
Author The first professional football match Richard Havers saw was at Brentford in the 1950s when the funniest thing about football was the shorts the players wore and the cap the keeper had on his head. Since then a career spent wrestling with aeroplanes, working with rock gods and writing the odd book has occupied most of Richard's time. Richard supports Spurs, who he believes will have a top 3 finish this season (.and that's not a joke!)
