"For more than 20 years Peter Warr's tall, restless figure was an essential ingredient at the centre of Formula 1" - Simon Taylor
Peter Warr is a legendary figure in Formula 1 where he was involved in the running of Team Lotus throughout the 70s and 80s. However were it not for his son Andrew searching on his computer weeks after his death, this candid and beautifully written memoir, Team Lotus: My View from the Pit Wall, may not have seen the light of day.
Having spent a majority of his working life at the heart of Formula 1, Peter Warr's fascinating biography remembers his time at Team Lotus and offers a unique insight into the drivers, designers, engineers and mechanics that made up one of the greatest teams in the history of Motorsport.
His son Andrew was looking for a completely unrelated document, and only stumbled upon the memoir by chance:
'We spent ages trying to log onto Dad's computer and when we eventually managed to work out his password and log on, we found a folder called Book. We knew he had been working on something but were not sure how much had been completed. I found that he had completed 6 chapters and quickly realised that it was a great set of memoirs. We spoke to the people at Haynes and they jumped at the chance to publish.'
Warr was one of Colin Chapman's closest allies, as well as the man who nurtured the early Formula 1 careers of Ayrton Senna and Nigel Mansell. Although his book was unfinished at the time of his death in 2010, the bulk of his work was done and Motorsport journalist Simon Taylor added his own insight about Warr to complete the work.
Around half of Team Lotus: My View from the Pit Wall covers the drivers that Peter worked with and he provides incredible insight into the characters and achievements of the true greats of the 70s and 80s. However his son Andrew, who works as a Programme Manager at Cosworth, feels the chapters about the engineers and mechanics are amongst the most rewarding:
'The unique thing about the book is that my Dad understood the importance of the engineers, designers and mechanics. The drivers obviously play a huge part in the success of a racing team, but the designers and mechanics are the people that make it a team, and who often get little credit and he wanted to tell their story.'
'The book means an awful lot to me and the family, and is a wonderful way to remember Dad. It is also brilliant that we have been able to create such a great memory for his Grandchildren.'
