In the run-up to the anniversary of the Queen’s accession to the throne (February 6th 2012) and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee celebrations (June 2012), Haynes is publishing Sixty Glorious Years, Queen Elizabeth II - Diamond Jubilee 1952 - 2012, a stunning commemorative picture collection drawn from the extensive Daily Mirror archive. With more than 300 pictures, many rarely seen before, this book document’s the life of Queen Elizabeth II and includes both formal portraits and behind the scenes ‘off duty’ pictures that give a fascinating insight into the life of our monarch.
Written by the Daily Mirror’s Royal Correspondent Victoria Murphy, the book covers the Queens’ glorious sixty years on the throne and, in so doing, charts the huge social, political and economic change the country has seen during that time. Through 12 Prime Ministers, four recessions, wars and a technological revolution the Queen has remained a constant, stable and popular figure at the head of the world’s most famous Royal Family.
Victoria Murphy has scoured the Daily Mirror photo-archive unearthing many early photographs that have seldom been seen before. From the earliest pictures showing the baby Elizabeth in a pram, the book takes the reader through her extraordinary life. All the big state occasions are here, the funeral of King George VI, the Coronation, the birth of her children and their subsequent weddings. But it is the informal pictures that give a real insight into the her life, pictures of her as a six year old at a friend’s party, learning car maintenance after joining the army as a mechanic or watching Prince Charles at his sports day. There are moving pictures such as the Queen visiting the Aberfan disaster in 1966 and Windsor Castle after the fire in 1992. And there are celebrities - the Queen meeting Marylin Monroe, a very young Bruce Forsyth and James Bond himself, Sean Connery in 1967.
Victoria Murphy says: “It was really exciting going through the archives dusting off pictures that have not been seen since the time they were taken. What is so interesting to my generation is to see the Queen in her younger days looking so glamorous - she was captivating. She was only 25 when she became Queen and this book really shows her changing and growing into that role.”
Sixty Glorious Years is a stunning pictorial tribute that offers an unparalleled look at the life and work of the woman who looks set to become Britain’s longest surviving sovereign.
Victoria Murphy is the Daily Mirror’s Royal Reporter. She provided extensive coverage of the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton in April 2011 and continues to travel the world reporting on the Royal Family.
