The word 'Haynes' has become synonymous with car and motorcycle manuals, and today the Haynes Publishing Group is the world leader in the field. In the 50 years since the company was founded it has grown to be an international business and one of the world's top publishers of motoring and motorcycling books. The Haynes 50 Years Manual tells the story of how one man's vision and enthusiasm gave a small enterprise in rural Somerset a global footprint.

50 years on from publishing their first car manual the rapidly expanding Haynes portfolio now covers a vast range of topics.

Written by a professional journalist, Jon Pressnell, this book is more than just a piece of vanity publishing to mark the company's 50th anniversary. Haynes 50 Years Manual tells a story that will interest anyone who enjoys motoring history and nostalgia. The early days of Haynes, in particular, are recounted with candour and colour, with plenty of anecdotes and fascinating stories along the way, supported by photographs from what now seems a bygone age.

John Haynes' first publishing venture was a 48-page booklet about building an Austin Seven Special, written when he was 16 and printed off on his school's Gestetner duplicator. In 1960, after several more books on special building had been printed, J.H. Haynes & Co Ltd was formed. The first 'proper' workshop manual, featuring step-by-step photographs, came in 1966 and covered the Austin-Healey Sprite and MG Midget. Little did its author know that his cottage industry was about to mushroom.

Over the years the range of titles has diversified. Books on all aspects of motorsport, cars and car technology were early additions to the portfolio, with many of them becoming classics in their own right and several winning prestigious awards. A range of motorcycle manuals has supplemented the car manuals. And the publication of the first all-colour bicycle manual in 1994 marked the beginning of a series of manuals not just on bicycles, successful though those were, but also on topics such as computers, home DIY and musical instruments.

The geographical reach of the company has also been transformed. Alongside the UK-based business, there are now substantial operations in North America and Australia - Haynes is the pre-dominant publisher of manuals in both of those markets - and in mainland Europe the Group has subsidiaries in Sweden and The Netherlands.
